Sigma Nu and Kappa Sigma Nu History |
Here we begin our efforts to provide our Brothers, Pledges and viewers information about the history of the Kappa Sigma Nu Colony that became the First Charter of the Eta Beta Chapter of Sigma Nu and the first social fraternity on the campus of East Carolina College, now East Carolina University. A narrative prepared by Jim Phelps, with assistance from Charley White and Lyle Cooper tells that story. You can download that narrative here for your records.
As the Kappa Sigma Nu Colony worked to become a chapter of Sigma Nu, some members granduated or left school while others continued at East Carolina and went on to be initiated as Sigma Nu Brothers. Had those early members of Kappa Sigma Nu not worked so hard to become recognized by the National Sigma Nu Fraternity, there would have been no Eta Beta Chapter; therefore, those early Kappa Sigma Nu Brothers who graduated or left school before the Sigma Nu Chapter was recognized are now considered "Sigma Nu Affiliates" invited to Snake Reunion activities.
Our viewers can now review and print (by clicking here) an official listing of all brothers initiated by the First Charter, Eta Beta Chapter of Sigma Nu Fraternity at East Carolina College/East Carolina University between 1959 and 1967.
We also have posted below, for your review, a copy of the telegram the Kappa Sigma Nu Colony received on January 27, 1958, announcing the Sigma Nu High Council had given preliminary approval for Kappa Sigma Nu to become affliliated with Sigma Nu Fraternity.
From another set of archives we were provided an old photo of the Kappa Sigma Nu colony from those early days. That photo is posted below. You may download it and save it in your "Snake Reunion" file and see how many of our Kappa Sigma Nu brothers you recognize. Just click on the photo to save it. Then bring up the photo again from your computer, as you saved it. From there you should be able to print a copy for your personal archives.
We are also pleased to post for your review a photo of Charley White and Roddy Jones expressing their delight with the contents of the Telegram from the Sigma Nu National Headquarters. You may want to save the photo and article on your computer, bring it up and enlarge it to read the article and print for your personal archives.
