Dear Brothers:
After our first reunion I felt like a first string player on the team that won the super bowl. It was great! All the planning and preparations since last April were very rewarding. Danny Wood, Bob Church, Bob Tuttle, Bill Young, Jim Stout , Jerry Williams and a number of others who carried the ball, were a fantastic team.
We wish to thank each of you who attended this our first official reunion of Kappa Sigma Nu and Sigma Nu in Raleigh. It was truly a unique experience and there were many genuine smiles and much happiness at all of the events. We missed those who were unable to attend, but we look forward to seeing them next time. In fact, many brothers are already thinking of next May for a celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Eta Beta Chapter.
We sincerely hope that every attendee left the 2008 Snake Reunion with something of lasting value, renewal of old friendships, interest in meeting brothers not met before and the thrill of actually being together to celebrate that very special time in our lives. Sure, there are other groups in all of our lives, other times and places, but none the same as with our Sigma Nu brethren. Each shared thought and recollection was very important to each of us and to others. We saw that after all those years, the bonds of brotherhood are still strong and always will be.
Soon we hope to announce plans for the next Snake Reunion so that advance plans can be made. Meanwhile, please feel free to communicate your ideas, thoughts and/or suggestions. The important element is the actual gathering of the people because the group magic of Sigma Nu has a way of making its own agenda.
We cannot thank each attendee enough for being there to help make the 1st Snake Reunion an outstanding success. Also, many thanks for all the notes and messages; it was a great feeling to know that each of you derived so much pleasure from being together.
Many who just couldn't make it this first year will surely be there next time, so we have much to look forward to and more reunions to celebrate in the future.
A few highlights from this year: Butch Stroupe definitely won the Distance Award for traveling from Kona, Hawaii to join us ... John Currin & Tommy Dean made it from California ... James Apple, Eddie Cockman, and Bolo James represented Florida ... Bob Church came in from Boston, Bob Keiber from New York, Terry Trexler from New Jersey, Ralph Stone and Marvin Throckmorton came from the DC area, Danny Wood from Tennessee and many others showed up from various places around the country.
Without doubt Dickie Tayloe is still the Most Original, as evidenced by his appearance on one occassion, in his authentic MADRAS SPORTCOAT, straight out of the '60s, and in his MADRAS TROUSERS at another event. Unlike most of us, he still fits into his vintage antiques! Bob Tuttle was first runner-up with his Bass Weejuns, even though he couldn't find any Oxblood Kiwi Polish to shine with.
Seems that many others still looked and acted the same as in the old days, give or take a few pounds and strands of gray here and there. Everyone was still Sigma Nu, through and through and they were hard-wired for fun and good times! Emory Sholar and Ray Spears still looked good with neck ties (probably from Coffmans). Brothers Roddy Jones, Lyle Cooper, Fat Man Flowers and others told about the early days in the mid '50s when there were no social fraternities at ECC and when Kappa Sigma Nu / Sigma Nu became the first on campus.
Not to forget, we wish to thank all the lovely ladies who joined us and helped to make the good times roll, it would not have worked without them. Rumblings were that the were organizing as the "Nu Nu s."
Till we meet again, Be Healthy, Happy, & Terrific !
Fraternally,
Millard Maloney, on behalf of
The HIGH COUNCIL of the Snake Reunion
P. S. Brother Steve Hochman and his wife Pat were scheduled to attend, but didn't make it because their first grandchild was born on September 2nd. so CONGRATULATIONS to all there and we'll see ya' next time.
