SALISBURY, NC - Volney Laverne "Chris" Christie, 70, of Salisbury, died on Saturday, May 23, 2009, at his residence. Chris was born on June 8, 1938, in Cabarrus County to the late Volney H. and Irma Louise Sides Christie. He was a graduate of A.L. Brown High School in 1956 and earned his bachelor's degree from East Carolina University in 1962. Brother Christie was a charter member of Sigma Nu Fraternity at ECU. Afterwards, he graduated from the flight officers training program in Pensacola, Fla. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1962 to 1966. He held the rank of lieutenant and was a navigator, flying 33 missions to Vietnam.
Chris retired from East Coast Metals Distributors in Durham, N.C. in 2005. He was a member of Milford Hills United Methodist Church and a member of the Cross Talk class. Brother Christie is survived by his wife of 44 years, Glenda Preslar Christie; one son, Kevin Glyn Christie and wife, Jessica, of Charlotte; one daughter, Shannon Christie Wickham and husband, Steven, of Asheville, N.C.; and three grandchildren, Mason Noel Christie, Stella Lee Christie and Sarah Delia Wickham. His funeral service was held at 1 p.m. on Monday, May 25, 2009, at Milford Hills United Methodist Church, with the Rev. David Hockett officiating. Burial followed at Carolina Memorial Park in Concord. Memorials may be made to Milford Hills United Methodist Church and Rowan Regional Home Health and Hospice.
Chris will always be remembered as HB 2 of the First Charter, Eta Beta Chapter of Sigma Nu Fraternity at East Carolina. He will be missed my those Sigma Nu brothers who knew him. Our thoughts go out to his family during this time of significant loss.
