Millard Daniel Maloney, Obituary
Millard D. Maloney

Millard Daniel Maloney, HB 88
February 18, 1940 - October 26, 2016

Millard D. Maloney, 76, of Raleigh, NC passed away, October 26, 2016 at home surrounded by his loving family.

Millard is survived by his wife Gwen of 53 years and their children Michael Maloney and his wife Heather, Kelly Glenn and her husband Mike, and Allyson Torti and her husband Michael. Surviving grandchildren are Michael and Eric Maloney, Sarah and Jessica Glenn, and Ty, Tiernan, and Tess Torti, all of North Carolina. Also surviving are daughter Ava Mire and husband John and her family of Nashville, Tennessee and sister Dotty Clark and her husband Charlie of Norfolk, Va. as well as countless friends.

Millard was born in Norfolk, Va. He studied at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC where he met and married his wife Gwen. While attending East Carolina he was Imminent Commander of the Eta Beta chapter of Sigma Nu. It brought him great pleasure to maintain his affiliation with Sigma Nu and he always looked forward to the annual Sigma Nu Snake Reunion. He was also a member of the William Pitt Masonic Lodge.

In 1964, he began a successful career in insurance sales and started his own insurance company in 1975. After 8 years of moving around NC and VA the family returned to Greenville and stayed until 1990 when relocating to Raleigh, NC.

Millard also enjoyed real estate development. Over the years, he was involved with building single family and multifamily properties.

Millard had a generous spirit and a bigger than life personality. He loved to talk, loved the beach, and music. He was also known for quirky gag gifts at Christmas time. He was a faithful Christian and loving father.

Words cannot express the family's sincere appreciation to his caretakers (Nyima and Sia) and the staff at Transitions Life Care.

A Celebration of Life was held on Saturday, November 5, 2016 at 2:00 p.m and his family invited friends, brothers and others to join them for a casual gathering at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh, NC. Memorial contributions may be made in Millard's honor to National Kidney Foundation or Transitions Life Care. (see links below)

Those who knew Millard knew he highly valued the concepts of Love, Honor and Truth, cornerstones of of Sigma Nu. Ten years ago he along with brothers Danny Wood, Jim Stout and Bobby Tuttle began what has turned into the Annual Snake Reunion that has also become the Eta Beta Alumni Association and will formally bring back the Eta Beta chapter at East Carolina University in early 2017 when well over 50 new brothers will be initiated into Sigma Nu.
