James Grant “Smokey” Gordon, age 84, of the Pondtown community near Brunson, died Saturday morning, August 21, 2021, at his residence.
“Smokey” was born in Gastonia, North Carolina on October 17, 1936, a son of the late Ernest Carl Gordon and Nora Adelaine (White) Gordon. He was a teacher, coach and principal his entire career.
He attended Wingate College where he was selected first team All American in football. During his life, he enjoyed Wingate athletics and was a member of the Bulldog Club.
From Wingate he attended East Carolina College/University and was a member of the Eta Beta Chapter of Sigma Nu fraternity ( HB 0036) and was also a great football player for East Carolina.
Afterwards he received his Master's Degree in School Administration from Western Carolina University. He was a member of the Jahab Shrine Club and Hampton Presbyterian Church. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman and the owner and operator of Jim's Place, a marina located on Wateree Creek, where the family worked until he returned to education in Hampton County.
“Smokey” was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Jerry Wade Gordon. Surviving are his wife, Sara Jana Bowden Gordon of Pondtown; daughters, Elaine Gordon Horchler and husband Jim of Pondtown, Cissy Gordon Greene and husband Pete of Beaufort and Eleanor Gordon Jarrell and husband Wes of Nixville; brother, Eugene Raymond Gordon of Belmont, North Carolina; grandchildren, Caroline, Miranda, Gordon, Jack, Janna Claire, Luke and Jonathan; and one great-grandchild, Levi.
A graveside service on Friday, August 27, 2021, at Hampton Cemetery conducted by Rev. Jack Dimond and directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home of Hampton.
The family requested that memorials be sent to the Shriners Hospital, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.
