Virginia Military Institute (VMI) Part 3
The Virginia Military Institute (VMI) is of special significance to all Sigma Nu Brothers because the fraternity was founded on the VMI Parade Grounds by three cadets, James Frank Hopkins, Greenfield Quarles and James McIlvaine Riley, on January 1, 1869 in Lexington.
VMI is also the nation's first state-supported military college, established in 1839, on the site of the Lexington Arsenal. Today two museums are found on the post. The VMI Museum happens to be the oldest museum in Virginia and the George C. Marshall Museum and Research Library houses the World War II Chief of Staff's personal papers and much more.
Cadet guided tours are available twice daily at 11:15 AM and 3:15 PM. Dress parades are usually scheduled on Friday at 4:30 PM, weather permitting, during the school year. Take a moment to visit VMI on the web at www.vmi.edu to learn more.
Brother Stout took Brothers Young and Williams on a tour after lunch on Friday, October 23rd. Below is a look at some of the photos taken there:
