"We ARE the Sigma Nu Snakes from East Carolina"

Butch Smith's Legacy
Julian C. "Butch" Smith, Jr. was HB 21 and known by many as "Whale" Smith. He was recognized as a "hail fellow well met" by those who knew him. And those who knew him were friends who loved his company. After ECU Butch went into banking as a member of the Planters Bank team. He and his wife were first located in Nashville, NC and later he became a part of the Planters Bank team in Plymouth, NC. After a number of years in banking, Butch worked with a trade association and later went into sales so he could travel the eastern part of the state. He loved Eastern North Carolina as much as anyone.

At the 2008 reunion Butch was one of the Sigma Nu brothers remembered among the deceased of the Eta Beta First Charter. Not many remember that Butch had a fine son, Julian Craft Smith, III.  Today Craft is a Lt. Colonel in the United States Army, serving in Afghanastan. Ole Butch would also be pleased to know that his son has a daughter and that she has modeled internationally. While we do not have photos of Butch's granddaughter we do have some recent photos of his son along with one photo of Butch with his son as a child.

While Butch is listed on our "In Rememberance..." page, we are pleased to remember him here and introduce First Charter Eta Beta brothers to his son, Lt. Col. Julian Craft Smith, III, Army Airborne.

As brothers check the reunion site and learn of this material on Butch's son, some may want to contact him with a rememberance of his father, as Bobby Tuttle has already done. Therefore his contact information is as follows:
