Commander Stout's Year End Report |
2012 An EPIC year for Eta Beta Alumni Association
I want to take this time to thank the many brothers, wives and friends who attended our fifth “snake reunion” this past fall in Greenville. It was truly a time of shared memories with old friends, making new friends and a time of enjoyment of our brotherhood as we recreated that “old Sigma Nu spirit" we all enjoyed during our collegiate days at East Carolina.
There have been many highlights and accomplishments during the 2012 year. Brother Jerry Williams did an outstanding job researching and drafting our newly adopted Eta Beta Alumni Association By-Laws. Our Lt. Commander, Danny Wood, again did a superior job of raising enough funds to create the new Eta Beta swimming endowment; honoring the Eta Beta brothers that helped draw national collegiate attention to the ECU swimming program. Donated funds were also used to cover the expenses for our fifth reunion.
Our attendance topped all previous reunions, with somewhere between 75-80 brothers, wives and friends attending SR-5. We were especially pleased with the large turnout of brothers who had never attended a previous reunion! If you haven't done so, be sure to check out our website (www.snakereunion.com) for the many pictures that are posted of SR-5.
As we look forward to 2013, we will return to Greenville for SR-6 and our Annual Brotherhood Meeting, probably during September for the Virginia Tech game. We have also received a lot of interest in reinstating an Eta Beta Chapter at ECU! Presently, Brother Millard Maloney and some others have been in contact with the ECU administration and Sigma Nu National Headquarters to seek out proper procedures to establish a “colony” at ECU. We will continue to monitor this development and keep you posted on their progress.
Soon Brother Danny Wood will be calling you for your support of our Alumni reunion and other activities. I had a brother call and ask, “Why are you doing this? Do you need to be in a fraternity to obtain a college education?” Good questions. My answer was very simple. The memories that we hold of ECU are not of the school and it’s fine academic, athletic, or fine arts programs. NOW it is our memories of the fun times and lasting friendships that bonded us together as brothers of Sigma Nu; something that is not taught in a classroom!
At any time you have a comments or question concerning the status of the Eta Beta Alumni Association, I ask you to email, stoutj@netlos.net, or call 540-471-7816. Stay in touch, check out our website and may God bless you and your family during this Holiday Season. Also, Happy New Year to our brothers, pledges and “Friends of Sigma Nu” from the Eta Beta Alumni Association.
Sincerely, James H. Stout, HB-71, ECU l963 Eta Beta Alumni Association Commander
