The next chancellor of East Carolina University is Cecil Staton, an administrator in Georgia’s university system and a former Republican state senator in Georgia. He was elected to the position unanimously Wednesday (April 27, 2016) by the UNC Board of Governors.
Staton, 58, is now interim president of Valdosta State University in Georgia and vice chancellor for extended education for the University System of Georgia. He starts the job July 1 at an annual salary of $450,000.
Born and raised in Greenville, S.C., Staton has been a faculty member, administrator, businessman and lawmaker. He is a scholar of religion and holds degrees from Furman University, master’s degrees from the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and a doctorate from the University of Oxford in England.
He succeeds Steve Ballard, who will leave ECU after 12 years as chancellor.
